Are you already on vacation or are you close to taking a few days off?
Read the tips that our Orthodontist, Dr. Beatriz Izquierdo, gives us to continue maintaining proper oral health this summer.
1. Schedule an appointment with your orthodontist
- Time for disconnection and enjoyment, but vacation days are also an ideal time to plan an appointment with your orthodontist to make sure that everything in your teeth is correct. It is an especially important “tune-up” if you have to go on a trip or getaway. On the other hand, it is also a good time to accompany the youngest members of the family to their first visit. Remember that early checkups are very important.
2. Do not forget good habits
- It is a propitious date to disconnect the mind, in which in addition, meal times may vary and where in some cases constant snacks are included, but this “disconnection” has a limit and you should not be tempted to become lazy and forget the hygiene habits learned in the clinic. Remember to brush your teeth after each meal to show off a healthy and perfect smile in addition to your tan.
3. Oral dehydration
- They say it on TV year after year, beware of dehydration! In this case, the lack of water in our body also has consequences in the oral cavity. If we ingest little water, the production of saliva in the mouth decreases, and we are less protected against the acid attack of bacteria. So in addition to the general reasons we all know, now you have one more. Take advantage, refresh yourself!
4. Fizzy soft drinks
- And what about fizzy drinks? The continued consumption of carbonated beverages and juices causes erosion of the enamel, and high temperatures together with dark drinks such as tea, coffee, etc., stimulate the appearance of dental stains. If you are one of those who do not let go of the glass on hot days, try to savor your drink as if it were the best cocktail, with a straw, so the contact with your teeth will be less.
5. High temperatures
- Who doesn’t love the beach and the pool? Raise your hand! But did you know that exposure to high temperatures favors the proliferation of microorganisms, and thus the risk of tooth decay? And that chlorine and other chemicals in the water can lead to increased tartar buildup, tooth stains and gum damage? Now you have no excuse, a toothbrushing kit at hand is a great ally.
6. Enjoy without risk
- If you are in love with strong emotions, contact sports, or you expose yourself to situations where you could suffer a major trauma such as playing with friends, in a swimming pool etc… Consider the serious idea of using a mouth guard. If you have braces, the risk of fracture or damage to your braces is even greater, so invest in protecting your teeth and gums! Among this summer’s memories, we don’t want a broken tooth.
And most importantly. . . .
Recharge your batteries, surround yourself with good company, and be very happy.
