Clínica Dental en Valencia » Conscious sedation
Conscious sedation is a technique used in dentistry to help patients relax during procedures that may cause anxiety or discomfort. Unlike general anesthesia, conscious sedation allows the patient to remain awake and aware, but in a state of deep relaxation.
Conscious sedation offers multiple benefits for both the patient and the dentist. Patients experience less anxiety and fear, making complex or lengthy treatments easier to perform. In addition, the ability to communicate with the dentist during the procedure allows for a safer and more controlled experience.
In Ilzarbe Dental Clinic we have a program adapted to our patients who suffer from anxiety or fear that prevent them from facing a dental treatment at any level.
Simply administering orally a medication that is a muscle relaxant, such as an anxiolytic, or we perform in the same clinic with the help of a professional anesthesiologist a CONSCIOUS SEDATION so that the patient is calm and relaxed throughout the treatment process, not knowing anything.
Conscious sedation is appropriate for most patients who experience anxiety or fear of dental procedures. However, it is not recommended for people with certain medical conditions, such as severe allergies to the medications used or severe respiratory problems. Before proceeding, the dentist will evaluate the patient’s medical history to determine if he or she is a suitable candidate for conscious sedation.
Preparation may vary according to the type of sedation used. Generally, it is recommended that the patient fast for a few hours before the procedure, especially if intravenous sedation will be used. It is important to follow all the dentist’s instructions to ensure the safety and efficacy of the sedation.
During conscious sedation, patients usually feel very relaxed and comfortable, and may have a distorted perception of time, feeling that the procedure takes less time than it actually does. Although they are awake, it is common for them not to remember much of the procedure. Sedation helps to significantly reduce anxiety and pain.
The duration of the sedation effect varies according to the type and dose of sedative used. Generally, the effects of inhaled sedation wear off quickly once the gas is stopped. On the other hand, oral and intravenous sedation may require the patient to remain under observation until the effects wear off completely. It is recommended that the patient be accompanied so that he/she can be safely transferred home after the procedure.
